The ABACUS ELECTRICS ANSI optical probes are bi-directional interfaces utilising infra-red light. Connecting to a computer serial port they permit galvanically isolated communication with tariff meters having an ANSI Standard Type 2 Optical Port.

Probes are available for use with lap-top or desk-top computers, and also for use with a variety of the hand-held computers commonly used for field data collection.
ABACUS ELECTRICS can also manufacture special-order probes for other hand-held computers and PDAs - please ask.

The probes for lap-top and desk-top computers are fitted with a standard 9-pin 'D' connector.
The A6Z and A7Z Zero-Power ANSI optical probes are convenient to use, as no battery or power supply connection is needed. They are compatible with most meters and programming software.
The A6R and A8R ANSI optical probes have greater infra-red light output and so require a battery or power supply connection.
The A9U probe has a USB connection and derives its power from the host computer.

The probes for hand-held computers are fitted with connectors to suit the hand-held.
The +5 volt powered A6R and A8R ANSI probes are used with the hand-helds as power is available through the computers serial port connector.

The Siemens (formerly Process Systems) meters do not quite conform to the ANSI C12.18-1996 Standard. The ABACUS A7Z and A8R ANSI probes should be used as they contains a DTR software switch providing logic compatibility with these meters. This 'switch' requires the application software to set the DTR serial control line appropriately for the make/model of meter to be read/programmed.

The probe housing is supplied either plain, as shown above, or with ears. The ears may be used to bind the probe securely to the meter in permanent installations. If ears are required the part number specified should be modified from -P- (Plain) to -E- (Ears).
For example, A6Z-E-D09F-2A instead of A6Z-P-D09F-2A.
